Are Mace and Pepper Spray Different Names for the Same Product?

What is the Difference between Mace and Pepper Spray?Oftentimes when you hear of Mace and Pepper Spray you think of the same thing; a canister filled with a spray and/or gas that you spray into an attackers eyes. Perhaps one of the reasons for this is that Mace is also the name of a manufacturer that produces Pepper Spray and other defense and security products.

This could be the reason why so many people incorrectly believe that Mace and Pepper Spray are the same thing. Be that as it may, Mace and Pepper Spray are actually two completely different defense weapons. But what exactly are the differences between the two? Let’s take a look at each individually

What is Pepper Spray?

Pepper Spray is really just as it sounds; a spray that is made up from the different oils found in Cayenne peppers. The oils are what cause the severe burning sensation in the eyes and, if inhaled, the throat as well. Not only does it cause a burning sensation, but it also causes inflammation around the eyes and skin that it touches. The effects of Pepper Spray begin immediately and have the ability to incapacitate an attacker for anywhere between 20 minutes to an hour. The effects wear off slowly for two reasons: Pepper Spray lingers in the air after it has been sprayed and it is relatively difficult to wash off.

What is Mace?

Mace is really quite different from Pepper Spray. Instead of using natural oils, it uses a chemical called Phenacyl Chloride, otherwise known as tear gas. Mace was created in the 1960’s by a man named Allan Litman, but was then discontinued around the 1980’s and 90’s because it seemed to have no effects on people who were intoxicated or had a high pain tolerance. This mistake caused thousands of police officers to be injured while trying to control people after the Mace failed to incapacitate the person. Mace has since been replaced by Oleoresin Capsicum, which is another component used in Pepper Spray.

Is Pepper Spray or Mace Better?

What are the Differences between Mace and Pepper Spray?

There are several key differences between Mace and Pepper Spray. The largest difference is that one contains a chemical and the other is composed of natural oils. Additionally, Pepper Spray is considered to be an inflammatory, while Mace is more of an irritant. Finally, Mace produces tears as a reaction to the chemical rather than from the pain that Pepper Spray causes.

Is Pepper Spray or Mace Better?

From the information that is provided it can be concluded that Pepper Spray is a significantly better product than Mace. Not only does it start working immediately on an attacker, but it lasts longer, is more effective against anyone who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and has side effects such as temporary blindness, nausea, and breathing difficulties. Mace, on the other hand, only causes tearing and a burning sensation similar to that of Pepper Spray.
